Press Release
September 3, 2013
The Norwalk and Westport Fire Departments responded to a reported car off the Merritt Parkway southbound and into the woods just prior to exit 40, at 8:24 am. The vehicle, a late model BMW 550i traveled 40’ down an embankment and came to rest on a storm drain culvert between the parkway and Creeping Hemlock Drive.
The two women in the car were uninjured, but remained in the vehicle for 20 minutes while firefighters worked to secure the vehicle and keep it from rolling over into the water in the culvert. Once the vehicle was stabilized and the drivers door removed the women exited the car and were escorted up to Creeping Hemlock Drive, where they both refused medical treatment.
A Norwalk Engine and Westport Engine remained on the Creeping Hemlock, and the Parkway until Parkway Auto Body, using two heavy duty wreckers safely removed from the culvert. The Parkways southbound traffic was reduced to one lane as emergency crews worked the scene till 10:45 am.
