Press Release
July 24, 2013
The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a leaking 100 lb propane cylinder at 11 Reynolds St at 6 pm Tuesday 7/23/13. The business, Artistic Iron Works uses the 100lb portable propane tank for heating and shaping in the fabrication of its iron products.
The incident started when the owner Ed Jankowski noticed a leak in the bottom of the corroded cylinder. He quickly moved the cylinder outside to the parking lot and called the fire department. The fire department with the assistance from the Fairfield County Hazardous Incident Response Team set up a flaring device to burn off and evacuate the remaining propane safely. Once the cylinder was empty the danger of an explosion was eliminated. The situation was placed under control and the cylinder left for the gas supply company to retrieve.
One engine, one ladder truck, and the regional haz-mat unit responded to the scene and cleared by 7:45pm. The business was open Wednesday morning as usual.
