Press Release

April 17, 2012

The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a fire at 261 Ely Ave. (Roodner Court) building 14.  Norwalk combined dispatch received a call of a possible structure fire on the third floor at 1:33 this morning.  This is a three story apartment building with 18 units in the building.  The first fire unit arrived on scene in less than three minutes after the 911 call and didn’t see any signs of smoke or fire, the alarm system was activated and tenants were evacuating.   Upon investigation we found a fire on the third floor in one of the units, a hose line was pulled and the fire was quickly knocked down.  The fire was contained to the bedroom of one unit with the rest of the apartment suffering smoke and water damage.  Adjoining units were checked for extension and smoke and at this time one other unit was posted unfit for occupancy.  The Norwalk Housing Authority will relocate the family of four until their unit is repaired.  The one occupant of the fire apartment was transported to Norwalk Hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation and will also be relocated by the housing authority.  The rest of the families were allowed to return to their apartments in about an hour after the fire was out and the building checked for any hazardous conditions.

This was the third structure fire within the last 24 hours that the Norwalk Fire department responded to.  The cause of the fire is being investigated by Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Hansen.  25 Firefighters on 2 Trucks, 3 Engines a Rescue and Command Car responded to the scene.  The last fire unit cleared the scene at 2:50 with the fire marshal division still on scene.
